Don’t join ISA protest, Khairy tells Umno Youth members

(Bernama) - Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has reminded party members not to join any procession to Istana Negara on Aug 1, either to protest against or support the Internal Security Act (ISA).

He said although the wing had received an invitation to join the procession, he had chosen to remain impartial and instructed every member to do likewise.

As Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein had begun the re-evaluation process (of the ISA), Khairy said there was no need to hold any demonstration or oppose the ISA.

"As a leader, I have instructed impartiality. We should not go beyond the process (of re-evaluation)... there is no need for a demonstration.

"Physically, I cannot stop them. If there is (any member intending to participate in the protest), they are not doing it in the capacity of Umno Youth," he told reporters after a meeting with Kedah Umno Youth leaders at Bangunan Tunku here today.

ISA Abolish Movement (GMI) is seeking an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on Aug 1 to convey a memorandum, “The Rakyat Declaration”, objecting to the use of the ISA.

Besides GMI, another movement, Majlis Permuafakatan Ummah (Pewaris), is expected to hold a demonstration to show its support for the Act, scheduled at the same time and location.

The two opposing groups are expected to use the same route to Istana Negara.

On another note, Khairy reminded Umno Youth members at divisional level to be aware of suggestions to amend the party's constitution and that they were required to give feedback on the matter before the party's general assembly in October.

He urged the party's machinery to speed up its move to attract more people such as teachers, Muslim scholars, intellectuals and bloggers to join the wing in strengthening Umno Youth.

The wing now has 750,000 members.
