(The Star) - Barisan Nasional has a 50-50 chance of winning the Manek Urai state by-election because the rakyat have started to see changes in the coalition, said Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
He said Kelantan Umno would choose a candidate for the contest before submitting the name to the party’s supreme council for final approval.
“We are participating in this by-election because the seat has fallen vacant due to the demise of the state assemblyman,” he told reporters after attending a Teacher’s Day celebration at Parcel D here yesterday.
He said Barisan was not falling for the Opposition’s “political game”, which had started with former Permatang Pauh MP Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail giving up her seat for her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“However, there is the death of the state assemblyman for Manek Urai and it is not a political game. We have started preparing for the by-election and we will contest the seat,” he said.
The Manek Urai state seat fell vacant after its representative Ismail Yaacob from PAS died of a heart attack on Friday.
