Umno Youth To Make Amends In Kuala Terengganu By-election - Hishammuddin

KLUANG, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election has given Umno Youth the opportunity to redeem itself following Barisan Nasional (BN)'s defeat in the Permatang Pauh by-election in August.

Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the movement would ensure that it was well-prepared for a stiff challenge from the opposition.

"We will garner the support of the younger generation in our quest to defend the seat.

"The by-election has presented us with the opportunity to make amends our debacle in Permatang Pauh," he told reporters after launching the Aidiladha sacrificial slaughter rite organised by Umno Youth at Felda Bukit Tongkat here, Tuesday.

The Kuala Terengganu seat fell vacant following the death of the incumbent, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail, while playing badminton at Aminuddin Baki Institute in Genting Highlands on Nov 28.

The by-election has been fixed for Jan 17, with its nomination day set to fall on Jan 6.

Hishammuddin, who is also Education Minister, said the BN had the edge in Kuala Terengganu as the political scenario was different from that of the March 8 general election.

"BN was beaten in the Permatang Pauh by-election as the seat was the opposition's stronghold. The considerations and strategies unleashed during the last general election and the Permatang Pauh by-election are no longer suitable now," he said.

Urging the opposition not to mar the by-election by creating troubles, he said, "Let us fight like gentlemen."

Present were Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin, its executive committee member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and Johor Umno Youth chief Razali Ibrahim.
