Selangor Sultan: Don't interpret Constitution for self interest

By Neville Spykerman and Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani

SHAH ALAM, March 10 - Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said today no one should misinterpret the federal and state constitutions for self interest or the benefit of a few.

Speaking at the start of the second term of the 12th state legislative assembly, the Selangor ruler said the constitution should be placed above all personal and political interest.

"I urged all parties, especially the people of Selangor to fully respect and follow the constitutions."

The ruler also urged the Selangor government to uphold good principles and the constitutions while administrating the state.

He said the most important principle is democracy, which means the people determine their fate.

"The views of the people are the best indicator on the success or failure of the administration of any state."

The ruler also remarked that of late there had been street demonstrations which had disrupted the peace and racial harmony enjoyed by all Malaysians.

"I urge all parties to stop actions which will affect Malaysia's image and focus instead on fostering stronger ties among all races."

He added that mutual respect between communities should be practiced to guarantee unity.
