Lum And Kohilan Going For Selangor Gerakan Chairman's Post

PETALING JAYA, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Datuk Lum Weng Keong dan A.Kohilan have offered to contest the Selangor Gerakan chairman's post at the party elections on Sept 7.

Lum, 51, the Selangor Gerakan chairman for nine years said he plans to revolutionise the party by addressing education issues and working closely with non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

"This is a multi-racial party, everyone can contest if they have the time to manage the party. It doesn't matter whether they are Chinese, Malays or Indians," said Lum who is also the Gerakan deputy secretary-general.

Gerakan central committee member Kohilan, 41, said he decided to contest the Selangor top post as he was encouraged by supporters having served the party for 20 years.

The Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister said he received over 70 percent support from members to contest the post, a first for an Indian in the party's 40 year history.

"Gerakan members want talents and are not bothered by race. The Chinese members had given me favourable comments."

He added the party grassroots and Selangor Gerakan delegates wanted to see change in the party.
